Trail miles are measured against PCT mile markers — the distance from his northernmost trail point (Hart's Pass) to the furthest south he has reached — so GPS wiggle, town trips and pre-trail travel don't inflate the count. The map line breaks only where Calvin moved faster than hiking pace between two fixes (a ride, shuttle, or flight) — those show as an off-trail stop. A long gap covered at walking speed (battery-saving sparse check-ins) stays connected on the trail. "Hide pre-trail travel" drops the points east of the Rockies from the flight out.
